Preparing For KMS Cheerleading

Here is some helpful information that will help you prepare for camp and tryouts. There are links to videos and images. To view scroll over and click on the link. 

*Stretch Prior to Practicing Jumps or Gymnastics*

How to Stretch Correctly & How To Improve Jumps 

  • Hold each stretch for 20-30 seconds.
  • Try to lay your torso flat on your legs instead of touching your leg/legs with your nose.
  • When you are stretching, stop and hold the position when you begin to feel a good stretch of the muscle. Hold the position until the muscle is lose (20-30 seconds). Repeat once more, this time trying to stretch slightly further.
  • Make sure you listen to your body and DO NOT push yourself too hard to prevent injury.
  • Practice your jumps using ankle weights.

*Required Skills*


There will be two different Starburst Drills that will incorporate the motions listed below.  First learn how to execute the motions correctly. Attached is a document that shows the different motions.  Motions should be sharp and tight. Here are several videos that will help you learn how to execute the required motions correctly. It is good to practice each of the required motions in front of a mirror to make sure you are executing each correctly.



Jumps will be done on a count using a specific prep. This is the count and prep we use.


Drills to improve jumps


Some examples of gymnastics that can add to your score are:

  • Front Walkover
  • Back Walkover
  • Standing Back Handspring
  • Front Handspring
  • Standing Back Tuck
  • Standing Front Tuck
  • Round off + Back Handspring
  • Round off + Back Tuck
  • Round off + Back Layout 

*These are only examples of different gymnastics that can be done to add to your score. Other gymnastics would be welcome and can add to your score. If you would like to perform something that is not listed here, or in addition to, please ask. We would love it! As with any gymnastics, NEVER attempt gymnastics while alone and without a qualified person.
