KMS Cheer

General Information

Seasons

There will be one tryout and one cheer team for each school year. Cheerleaders who make the squad have three seasons during which they can cheer:

  • Football,
  • 8th Grade Basketball, and
  • 7th Grade Basketball.

Cheerleaders can cheer for all 3 seasons or tryout for other sports they are interested in. This means that cheerleaders can have the opportunity to play basketball or softball. All cheerleaders must let the coaches know which seasons they will be cheering for prior to the start of each season.

Games

Football Season – Games for football are normally held on Wednesdays. However, due to shortages in referees last year, games were occasionally held on days other than Wednesdays.  Games begin at 4:45 and generally last until 6:15. The football schedule will be provided prior to the start of the football season. We do not travel to away games.

Basketball Season – For both the 7th and 8th grade season, games are generally on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays. Games for basketball can also be on different days of the week, but this has been rare. Tournament dates often fall on various days of the week. A schedule for basketball will be provided prior to the start of basketball season. Cheerleaders cheer for both the girls and the boys basketball games that occur back to back. The games begin at 4:30 and last until approximately 6:30. We do not travel to away games.

Practices

All practices will be held on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 2:30-4:00. If you should need to miss a practice for any reason, please contact the coach in advance if at all possible. If a cheerleader misses practice the day before a game, she will not participate in the half-time show or any stunts during that game. Stunting is a very important part of cheerleading at KMS and safety is our primary concern. If a cheerleader is not present when practicing stunts, she cannot be included in them. A cheerleader who has excessive absences will be removed from the cheerleading squad.

Rules/Expectations

Cheerleaders are role models and represent our school. As such they are expected to demonstrate a positive attitude, appropriate behavior, and high level of academic achievement. All cheerleaders must sign a contract stating that they will follow these rules as outlined. The rules are as follows:

  • Maintain a “C” average or higher in all classes
  • Follow rules, procedures, directions, and expectations for student behavior during school hours and activities
  • Demonstrate respect, courtesy, and thoughtfulness toward all others
  • Have a positive attitude
  • Give your best during practices and games
  • Represent KMS, the cheerleading squad, yourself and your families well

Disciplinary Action

Negative behavior in class, in school, in practice and/or a game – If a cheerleader demonstrates negative behavior and it is seen or reported to the coach, the coach will determine disciplinary action as she sees fit. This action may be limited to the individual or may result in consequences being applied to the whole squad. This will be determined in a case by case basis and at the coach’s discretion.

If grades fall below a C average – In the instance that a cheerleader’s grades fall below a C average, the cheerleader must sit out until her grade is brought back up. The given teacher will sign off that the cheerleader has brought up the grade to a passing average so she can then participate.

Office and/or Disciplinary Referral – If a cheerleader receives an Office and/or Disciplinary Referral, the cheerleader will face a one game suspension along with a mandatory conference with the coach. Further consequences will be determined by the coach and/or administration depending on the severity of the offense.

Suspension – Any cheerleader who is suspended from school for any reason will automatically be removed from the cheerleading squad.

All the points and consequences defined under the section Rules/Expectations, as well as, Disciplinary Action, are non-negotiable. Each cheerleader and parent must sign an agreement that states that she/he understands these expectations and consequences for any violations, and promise to abide by the expectations defined herein. No person will be allowed on the KMS Cheer Squad without having signed this form.
