                      Welcome to

Mrs. Grier's 8th Grade Science Classroom

My name is Mrs. Doretha Grier, and I will be your child’s eighth grade science teacher.  Since I will be spending quite a bit of time with your child, I would like to take the opportunity to tell you a little about myself – both personally and professionally.

I was born and raised right here in Kannapolis.  I have been in education for 25+ years and I am excited to share this experience with you and your child.

College(s) Attended/Degrees Earned:

I earned a BA in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.  My teaching certification and  a Masters in Education was obtained from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.  In addition, I obtained Academically Gifted Certification from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and I currently hold National Board Certification in Middle Grades/Early Adolescence Science.

Educational Philosophy/Vision:

My goal is to engage students in a framework for 21st Century Learning in preparation for their future in contributing to society.  An exciting year is planned for my students.  The year will be filled with explorations through topics such as:  Properties and Changes of Matter, Energy Conservation and Transfer, Structures and Processes of Earth Systems, Earth History, Structures and Functions of Living Things, Ecosystems, Evolution and Genetics, and Molecular Biology.  There will be numerous opportunities for students to engage in hands-on activities/projects that will hopefully instill an enthusiasm for learning.  Aside from teaching science, I will also be integrating math, writing, and reading skills into the curriculum.

Things parents/guardians can do to help:
Please Note:
I am available to meet with you daily from 8:30 a.m.- 9:30 a.m. Call to schedule an appointment. Tutoring is available and must be scheduled prior to attending.  Monday and Wednesday from 2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Parent involvement is key to student success.  Please take the opportunity to browse my webpage and google classroom.  It will give you a view of my classroom and is filled with resources you and your child can use ensure success.  The sites are methods of communicating weekly and daily activities your child will be engaged in and responsible for.   I want to make sure all of my parents are aware of their child's grades in class so I encourage you to review Google Classroom frequently. This will allow for the opportunity to have discussions about science topics at home that encourages students to work with their parents. I am unable to call every parent for every score (although I would like to) so this serves as notification of what topic your child did not fully understand and allows parents to encourage him or her to seek extra help!
I encourage you to be an advocate for your child and stay involved with what they are doing daily. You may also visit Powerschool for updates on your child's status in the classroom.
